Ponniyin Selvan Movies' Making Video: BTS feat Cast & Crew

Part 2 of the Mani Ratnam directed Ponniyin Selvan movie, titled Ponniyin Selvan 2 or PS-2 is all set to release in theaters worldwide on April 28, 2023 [Friday]. At this time, Sun TV - satellite partner of the film has unveield a 17-minute video detailing the process of what went into the making of a epic movie like Ponniyin Selvan


Ponniyin Selvan is a 5-part novel written by Kalki Krishnamurthy, and he had based his stories on the real life 9th century Chola history. Director Mani Ratnam said that his team realized how much research Kalki had done on the true life history, for whenever they wanted an answer to something, they found it in the books itself. 


With the Ponniyin Selvan movies, the director definitely pulled a casting coup and almost everyone alluded the same to the respect they had for Kalki and his work, which is considered one of the finest in Tamil literature. Composer AR Rahman on the other hand suggested an 'outside perspective' for this project and brought in international composers and mixers to capture the grandiose of this epic drama. 


Rahman revealed how Mani Ratnam felt this was the right move, immediately after the first session with the international crew of musicians. A Thailand-based stunt master has also played a crucial role in choreographing most action sequences in Ponniyin Selvan movies. The Cholas, in real life were among the first royal dynasties in the world to own ships of their own. They are also among the first known human races to do sea trade. A lot of this has been brought to life in the movies using VFX, CGI & the like. 


Despite working meticulously and elaborately on each of the leas stars' looks and production design, team Ponniyin Selvan like the rest of the world was hit with 'indefinite lockdown' immediately after their first schedule. The rest of the shooting was completed during peak COVID-era, and Mani Ratnam said it was a risk by Vikram, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Karthi, Jayam Ravi, Trisha, Aishwarya Lekshmi, Jeyaram, Shobita Dhulipala, R. Parthiepan, Sarathkumar, Prabhu, Vikram Prabhu among others to shoot during that time.
