Director Shankar's Anniyan starring Vikram in the lead is a 2005 Tamil psychological action thriller that went on to win a National Film Award for Best Special Effects that year. The movie was a runaway hit and even dubbed versions of the film are extremely popular in other languages. So much so that 13 years later i.e. in 2018, Bollywood actor Ranveer Singh showed interest in starring in the film's official remake, and the Hindi version was officially announced in 2021.
Tamil cinema in recent times is witnessing a theatrical re-release of old hits in remastered versions. Following Rajinikanth's Baba and Kamal Haasan's Vettaiyaadu Vilaiyaadu, Vikram starrer Anniyan is also gearing up for a remastered version release.
