Bad Newz Review - A Passable Outing that Deserved Better Screen-Writing!

Bad Newz is a comedy drama starring Vicky Kaushal, Tripti Dimri and Ammy Virk in the lead roles. Produced by Dharma Productions, Amazon Prime, from the team of Good Newz.

Premise:

Tripti Dimri gets pregnant after separating from Vicky Kaushal. After the paternity test the doctor reveals the result as Heteropaternal Superfecundation, twins whose fathers are different.

Writing/ Direction:

The core conflict is very unique and terrific to create a cracker of an entertainer. But the idea is underwhelming as the development isn’t fascinating enough. The setup in the first half is weak with barely any cherishing moments. The chemistry between the lead pair didn’t really fall in place as there was a very minimal romance portion for us to absorb their bonding and the divorce decision was too quick. The pre-interval is good with the drama taking the center stage. The latter half is significantly better than the former, especially towards the end. The emotions clicked well in the climax with a well placed plot point. The fun element also worked at a few places. However, nothing is too great to settle up for all the flaws and boring parts. It just makes us leave the cinema hall with the feeling of it could have been so much more for the potential the story had, not bad on the whole. Also, the legend status in the narrative is questionable as the topic might be peculiar, but the execution isn’t that impressive.

Performances:

Vicky Kaushal is the star of the movie, he brings in so much commercial value to the film with his jovial screen presence. His character is also better than the rest, brings in some dynamism and offers variety. Tripti Dimri retains her position of National Crush, she is extremely good looking and she utilizes being the central character of the film by performing neatly. Ammy Virk is tailor-made for his role, he shines in the fun aspect. Ananya Pandey’s cameo has a purpose, but the poor girl can’t act to save her life.

Technicalities:

Decent songs, all the old nostalgic tracks are a lot more enjoyable. Music director has really gotten hold of the timing by skilfully placing some funky sounds that evoke laughter at places. The cameraman has provided what was exactly required for the screen, nothing more and nothing less, colour presentation on the whole. It could’ve easily been a crisp 2-hours movie, there were many lags in the first hour, needless detailing for certain scenes that just sit as fillers.

Bottomline

A refreshing banger conflict that is commercially viable at the same time, but settles to be a partially entertaining flick by offering just a minimal dosage of a variety of elements.
