Andhagan Preview: Reasons to watch Prashanth's black comedy

Five years since his last on screen appearance, actor Prashanth gears up for the release of his next movie Andhagan: The Pianist on August 9, 2024. A black comedy directed and produced by Prashanth's father Tiyagarajan, Andhagan marks the actor-director duo's fifth film together after Mambattiyan (2011), Ponnar Shankar (2011), Shock (2004), and Aanazhagan (1995). 5 quick reasons why Andhagan warrants a watch in movie theaters:

1. Story/PlotlineAndhagan: The Pianist is an official remake of Sriram Raghavan's Hindi hit Andhadhun (2018), which has three National Film Awards to its credit - Best Hindi Film (2019), Best Adapted Screenplay (2019), and Best Actor 2019 (Ayushmann Khurrana). Prashanth plays a blind pianist named Krish, who gets embroiled in the murder of an actor (Karthik). What roles do Simran, Priya Anand and others play in this story, if Prashanth is visually impaired or not, and how he gets out of the murder accusation, is played out with an extremely interesting set of events.

2. Cast: Not only does Andhagan marks lead actor Prashanth's comeback, it also sees the return of beloved on-screen pair Prashanth and Simran. Unlike their previous roles where they played each other's romantic interests, Prashanth and Simran's characters share an out-of-the-box dynamic in Andhagan: The Pianist. The presence of actors like Karthik, Samuthirakani, Urvashi, Priya Anand, Yogi Babu, among others are added bonuses.

3. Genre: Superstar Rajinikanth famously remarked about the black comedy genre last year stating, "They say its black comedy which is all new to me. I cannot fathom such comedy at all..(they) insert comedy in serious scenes".  The genre may be new to a stalwart like him, but actor Prashanth notably was part of one of the earliest black comedy films of Tamil cinema, Thiruda Thiruda (1993). Andhagan: The Pianist marks Prashanth's evolved return to the black comedy genre.

4. Production: It was officially revealed that team Andhagan spared no expense in production right from the word go. Producer Tiyagarajan bought the Andhadhun remake rights for a whopping Rs. 5 Cr, and agreed to a 30% share of the film's profits to the original makers (Viacom18, Matchbox Pictures), amidst tough competition. Tiyagarajan has additionally ensured good cinematic value in Andhagan: The Pianist movie, going by the videos released so far.

5. Other: Despite being an out-of-the-box mystery thriller, Andhagan is neither too short nor too stretchy. The movie comes with a desired runtime of 2 hours and 20 minutes i.e. 160 minutes.
