A heart-wrenching children's drama, Vaazhai is a semi-autobiographical account of Tamil filmmaker Mari Selvaraj, who has written and directed the film. The movie has been garnering critical acclaim ever since its release on August 23, 2024, and latest to join the praise-bandwagon is Superstar Rajinikanth.
The Tamil star on Tuesday took to X to share a letterhead of thoughts on Vaazhai. English translation of the content follows:
Rajinikanth's Letter About Vaazhai
"Message of Congratulations
I have watched Mr. Mari Selvaraj's film "Vazhai". After a long time, a wonderful, quality film has come in Tamil.
Mari Selvaraj has taken us back to his youth. That too, it feels like we are experiencing the sufferings and hardships experienced by that boy (in the movie). In the climax, when the boy wanders about starving, when the mother screams that 'my boy has not eaten a morsel', our hearts pound.
Mari Selvaraj has proved that he is a great director with this film.
My sincere appreciation and best wishes to Mari Selvaraj.
With Love,
Rajinikanth."
Mari Selvaraj's Response: "I am writing with the tender fingers from the dreams of that same boy, who searched and collected your photos in the old tin box. Thank you for your greetings and warmth, our Superstar Rajinikanth sir."

Vaazhai is set in 1998 and follows the story of a school going boy, who is forced into lugging raw banana bunches to escape poverty. The movie is estimated to have grossed a box-office collection, three times its budget already.
