Director Mani Ratnam's Madras Talkies produced Nerukku Ner (1997) is a dual hero movie, that marked the acting debut of actor Suriya. Suriya starred alongside Vijay in this Vasanth directed movie (It was director Vasanth who gave the stage name Suriya to the actor whose birthname is Saravanan Sivakumar), which back then was a commercial success, and won two Tamil Nadu State Film Awards. 

September 6, 2024 marks 27 years since Nerukku Ner's release, and in turn 27 years of Suriya in the Tamil film industry. Suriya , currently a star actor in Kollywood, also runs a production house called 2D Entertainment alongside actress-wife Jyotika. One of 2D Entertainment's upcoming productions is Suriya 44 (tentative title), which is written and directed by Karthik Subbbaraj.
