Conveniently Written, Yet A Commendable Execution!

Gimmicky narrative and a favorable paperwork are the major shortcomings. The engaging flow and a cracker of a finale with punchy plot twists hide away the flaws and makes it an interesting watch.(more)

An engaging but engineered film that works even with faults

Vijay Sethupathi is wonderful in his 50th film, and he has a well-written role at his disposal. The makers have definitely put in extra effort in conceptualising his character, as almost all actions that he does and almost all dialogues that he says have a payoff. And, regardless to say, the actor delivers. But this care for detail isn't given to the characters played by the other big names. Abhirami, Mamta Mohandas, Bharathiraja and Divya Bharathi seem to just be there because the makers wanted to rope in certain big names and not because their presence made any difference to the character or the plot.(more)

Vijay Sethupathi film is bogged down by convenient writing

'Maharaja' has a lot going on. Sadly, the hits and misses are not proportional, with the latter having the upper hand. These good moments get buried under dark humour, which hardly works, and many other shortcomings.(more)

Vijay Sethupathi is stellar in this thrilling tale of a desperate father

Maharaja, as a story, is very engaging but its not without its flaws. The non-linear narrative can confuse viewers if they dont closely follow the story. Its not a straightforward crime thriller and thats one of the reasons why it works to a great extent. With red herrings thrown in and intricate sub-plots that unfold, Maharaja keeps you engaged and eager to know what's next. Interestingly, while the women in the film may have had smaller roles, they are quite important to the story. Having said this, at the heart of this story is a father-daughter relationship that will connect to the audience emotionally and perhaps even have them reflect on their own relationship with their daughters.(more)

A Screenplay Wonder

Maharaja serves as an exemplary illustration of how to craft a captivating screenplay. At its core, it is a revenge drama, but it also explores deeper emotional themes, maintaining suspense until the very end(more)
